Selby, North Yorkshire has undergone many changes over the past few years, it now attracts shoppers from all over the country due to its ever growing number and variety of shops, couple this together with the ample parking available throughout the town and you soon realise why more and more people are frequenting Selby for their shopping needs. From well known high street stores right down to the quaint back street tea rooms, Selby has something for everyone, whether you are shopping, sight seeing, working or just passing through, you can't help but notice what Selby has to offer. Not only does Selby boast a large range of shops but it also hosts one of the best open air markets in Yorkshire, every Monday all year round shoppers come from miles around for some excellent bargains.

Local business has also been on the increase for a number of years, which has led to a lot of people relocating to the area; this in turn has meant the need for more new housing developments in the area which has been subtly achieved by the local planning office without over development of the area.

Selby is a busy and growing market town, 12 miles south of the City of York, in North Yorkshire. Although historically part of Yorkshire's West Riding, Selby is now the southern-most district in the non-metropolitan county of North Yorkshire. The town's population, known as Selebians, was 13,012 as of the last national Census (2001).

Built around Selby Abbey as its magnificent centrepiece, much of the town's wealth historically came from the banks on of the River Ouse on which it sits. The port of Selby was hugely important to the town’s growth as was its canal, linking the town with Leeds.

Due to it's proximity to the nearby cities of York and Leeds, Selby is currently experiencing a period of rapid growth, with new development being focused on the town and it's satellites, Tadcaster and Sherburn in Elmet.

Selby mapAs the town has expanded, together with the opening of the Selby by-pass in 2003, investment and regeneration has started to benefit the Town. The previously neglected Waterfront area of the town has already seen much investment, with more to follow as multi million pound flood defence construction.

Shopping areas are seeing improvement too, with new edge-of-town shopping complexes such as the Three Lakes Park bringing new retailers to the town. Town Centre shopping is also set to benefit from a major revamp in the coming years.

Yorkshire Forward and local authority, Selby District Council, are also working on a new 25 year vision for the future of the town's economy, environment and community as part of their 'Urban Renaissance’ programme.

The hustle and bustle of market day has been a part of life in Selby since the 14th Century when the monks of Selby Abbey founded it. Today, the open-air market is held every Monday in its traditional setting of Selby's Market place and also extends into Micklegate (known locally as Wide Street). More than 120 stalls offer shoppers a huge variety of goods, including local produce, household goods, clothing, confectionary and gift items. Weekly auctions also take place in the car park to the rear of The Londesborough Hotel.

On Bank Holiday Mondays, Selby Market is significantly extended to cover Finkle Street, James Street and The Abbey Vault's Car Park. This extended market is arguably the largest and most popular market in the North of England. The event is renound for it's carnival like atmosphere which attracts thousands of visitors from all over the country. Selby's Market Place is also host to monthly farmer's markets offering a wide range of produce and occasional continental markets offering a more exotic selection of goods.
